Some History about Pleasanton Ca. 94566, 94588
The Amador-Livermore Valley was first sighted by a Spanish solider, Captain Pedro Fages, in 1772 while on an expedition searching for new mission sites. It was half century after this discovery in 1826 that Jose Maria Amador brought the first settlement to the valley.
Augustine Bernal was the first settler in the immediate area of Pleasanton 1850. The adobe house he built in Foothill Road is still standing today. Bernal discovered that the land just west of Pleasanton was excellent for training and racing horses. A track was carved out bringing life to the now famous Pleasanton Race Track. Today the race track is an integral part of the Alameda county Fairgrounds which has facilities for golfing, roller skating, road rallies, tennis, picnics concerts, dances and meetings.
By the mid 1850's, it was the bandits and desperadoes that gave Pleasanton its tide of "The Most Desperate Town in the West." Main Street shoot-outs were not uncommon. Infamous bandits, such as Joaquin Murrieta, would ambush prospectors on their was back from the gold and then seek refuge in Pleasanton.
The "desperate years" lasted until roughly 1871 at which time life calmed down considerably in the little town of Pleasanton. Ranchers and thoroughbred horse breeders were attracted by the favorable climate and abundance of water, and were soon followed by dairy farms, hop fields, and vineyards. Pleasanton was incorporated in 1894 and by 1900 was a thriving agricultural community complete with the Bank of Pleasanton, the Pleasanton Hop Company, the Ruby Hill Vineyard, and three fancy hotels.
Phoebe Apperson Hearst brought fame and fortune to Pleasanton after she built her magnificent home "Hacienda del Pozo de Verona" at the present site of Castlewood Country Club. What was planned to be a hunting lodge for her husband became internationally known as a showplace for art, architecture, and entertaining on a grand scale.
By 1930 enterprising men such as Henry J. Kaiser had determined the great potential of sand and gravel below the Valley surface. The gravel industry has been one of the Valley's most enduring and profitable throughout the last half century.
As the century progressed and businesses and professional people moved into town, the emphasis moved away for agriculture. Today Pleasanton manages to preserve the "turn-of-the century" flavor of our city with the growth and progress that is necessary for the economic health of any community. There are 4,523 businesses and industries presently located in Pleasanton.
